What is a warm backup site?

A warm backup site is a recovery location that has hardware available and is configured for use in the event of a disaster, but it does not have real-time data replication. This means that while the necessary infrastructure is in place, data must be transferred to the warm site from the primary site before it can become operational. This method provides a balance between cost and readiness, being more prepared than a cold site (which lacks any operational hardware) but not as immediately available as a hot site (which operates in real-time).

The idea behind a warm backup site is to minimize downtime during recovery while recognizing that some preparation and data transfer will still be necessary. The infrastructure at the warm site needs to be maintained and kept up to date, but it won’t be actively receiving constant data updates as a hot site would. This makes it a suitable option for organizations that require a quicker recovery time than a cold site but are not able or willing to invest in the continuous data synchronization needed for a hot backup site.
